Picnics are where finger foods get to shine. Sandwiches, deviled eggs, varieties of colorful fruit and veggies, and various snacks are all perfect ways to enjoy the outdoors. This article provides some ideas for the types of foods and drinks that are easy to make, can be made ahead of time, and don’t require bringing more than a few basic utensils.

Sandwiches

Sandwiches are the all-time simple and traditional picnic food. There are various types, from BLTs and tuna-egg sandwiches to tea sandwiches and more elaborate open-faced sandwiches with creamy spreads. These linked recipes only take from 10 to 30 minutes to make!

Summer Charcuterie Boards

Charcuterie boards are usually present food on cutting or presentation boards, but for picnics, where food can easily move around, boards aren’t practical or convenient. But there are alternative options! You can pre-portion the food into individual containers, such as Tupperware containers, that close and help preserve the visual appeal of the arranged ingredients. Or, you can purchase an outdoor charcuterie board box that has pre-portioned dividers. But if your location has picnic tables, then charcuterie boards are not an issue. Simply bring the individual ingredients and assemble the board at the location!

Salads

Salads take little time to prep and are refreshing for hot summer days. Any of these salads can be made ahead of time but I recommend leaving out the dressings until ready to eat so that the ingredients are kept fresh longer.

Desserts

No meal is complete without something sweet. These recipes can be made ahead of time and store well during transportation.

Drinks

Cooling drinks are a summer essential. All drinks can be mocktails or alcoholic drinks with slight changes of ingredients.

Hopefully this list gave you some ideas on foods and beverages that will elevate your picnic experience. Most of the recipes can be made ahead well ahead of time, delayed in assembly to keep freshness, and are most definitely delicious. What is your picnic food or beverage must-have?
