Cooking with bases like Dominican sazón liquido and sofrito is how Dominicans and Caribbeans give fresh, rich flavor to their food. If you want to recreate the authentic flavors of the Dominican Republic, you’ll want to keep your fridge stocked with these basics.

This sazón liquido is a homemade version of the Baldom Ranchero’s liquid seasoning, which is an all purpose marinating seasoning for meat, poultry, and fish.

What you’ll need to make Dominican sazón liquido

  • Bell peppers. Use green and red bell peppers contribute sweetness and color.
  • Onion. Yellow onion is my go to for this recipe.
  • Tomato. Adds color to the Dominican sazón liquido.
  • Lime. Lime adds acidity and brightness.
  • Cilantro. Cilantro adds freshness to the sazón.
  • Garlic. Garlic is essential in this all purpose seasoning.
  • Apple cider vinegar. Apple cider vinegar provides tanginess and helps preserve the sazón liquido.
  • Soy sauce. This adds some flavor and helps tenderize meats and poultry.
  • Capers. This is apart of the original Rancheros recipe.
  • Oregano. If you can get your hands on Dominican oregano then use it in this recipe!

Common questions

Is sazón the same thing as sofrito?

No, sazon is not the same thing as sofrito, though sofrito is sometimes referred to as sazón in Dominican cuisine. Sofrito is a green seasoning and in most cases, sazón liquido is an orange colored all purpose marinating seasoning.

Can you make Dominican sazon liquido without capers?

Yes, you can still make Dominican sazón liquido without capers. Instead of capers, you can substitute chopped green olives. The olives will provide a similar briny and tangy flavor to the sazón liquido.
